James began athletics in New Zealand at the age of six and by the age of ten recognised his ability in both the 800m and 1500m events.

Moving to Sydney in 2004, James continued to develop his Athletics career and in the 2007 season made some significant improvements. He placed 6th in a very close final that saw all 8 runners finish within a second and a half or each other.

In 2008 James won the Australian U20 800m championship and posted five world Junior qualifying performances including a new personal best time for the 800 meters of 1.47:62.  Subsequently he selected in the Australian team for the IAAF World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland where once again he made the 800 meters final finishing a very creditable 8th place.
